What is brush lettering?

Brush lettering is the art of drawing letters with a brush or brush pen, using pressure to change the thickness of each stroke. You press down for thick downstrokes and lighten up for thin upstrokes, and that contrast is what gives the letters their flowing, script look. It is closely related to modern calligraphy, but looser and more forgiving, which makes it a great place for beginners to start.

In my workshops we letter with watercolors instead of ink. That means you also get to play with color: blending shades inside a single word, letting one color bleed into the next, and ending up with lettering that looks painted rather than written.

What you'll learn in a Vintage Unicorn workshop

  • Brush pressure and control. How to hold the brush and make consistent thick and thin strokes.
  • The basic strokes. The handful of shapes that every lowercase letter is built from.
  • Letters and words. How to connect strokes into letters, and letters into flowing script.
  • Watercolor technique. How much water and paint to load, and how to blend colors within your lettering.

I teach step by step and live, so you watch each stroke and then try it yourself with your practice worksheets. It's a zero-pressure, fun environment. Nobody's lettering looks perfect on the first try, and that's the point of coming to a class.

What's included in the class

  • A full starter material kit: paints, brushes, premium paper and custom practice worksheets, yours to keep
  • Step-by-step live instruction
  • Access to Cala Millor's special Happy Hour food and drink menu during class

Just bring yourself. Everything you need is waiting at your seat.

Next workshop: October 27, 2026 at Cala Millor

The next Brush Lettering Workshop with Watercolors is on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM at Cala Millor, a Spanish restaurant at 4000 SW 57th Ave (Red Road), Miami, FL 33155. Red Road is the line between Coral Gables and the neighborhoods to its west, so it's an easy trip from Coral Gables, South Miami and Coconut Grove.

Think of it as a creative night out: an evening of color, lettering and tapas. It works well for a date night, a girls' night, or a solo treat.

What is the difference between brush lettering and calligraphy?

Traditional calligraphy is usually written with a pointed or broad-edged pen and follows the rules of a specific script. Brush lettering uses a brush or brush pen and is looser and more expressive. Both rely on the same idea of thick downstrokes and thin upstrokes, so what you learn in a brush lettering class carries over to modern calligraphy.
